Two of the fundamental actions in a D2L Gradebook are the creation of grade items and categories.  Grade items will be the Gradebook columns that contain assessment scores, and Categories  can be used to group grade items by type.

Create a Category

Grouping grade items into Categories keeps them together in the Gradebook, and if each grade item in a category has the same point value, you can decide to drop the lowest scoring grade item(s).   Here are the instructions with options

  1. From your D2L Course Home page, click on Grades in the main navigation bar
  2. Click the Manage Grades tab.
  3. Click on the dropdown arrow next to New and select Category.
  4. Type a Name for the category (e.g., Quizzes, Short Papers, Homework)
  5. Best Practice: Leave  unchecked (or uncheck) Display class average to users and Display grade distribution to users under under Display Options.
  6. Best Practice: If all grade items in the category have the same number of points, check Distribute points across all items and enter the points per item.
  7. Best Practice: If in fact all grade items in the category have the same number of points and you check Distribute points across all items, you can opt to drop the lowest grade item(s) for each student.  If you make this choice, do so near the end of the semester.
  8. Best Practice: Leave the Student View boxes unchecked.
  9. Click Save
Create a Grade Item
Grade items may be stand-alone, or grouped into categories.   Here are the instructions, with both options:
To create a stand-alone (uncategorized) Grade Item:
  1. From your D2L Course Home page, click on Grades in the main navigation bar.
  2. Click the Manage Grades tab.
  3. Click on the dropdown arrow next to New and select Item.
  4. Click on Numeric.
  5. Type a Name for the grade item(e.g., Quiz 1. Short Paper 2).
  6. OPTIONAL: Type a “short name” only the instructor will see in the Gradebook view (e.g., Q1, SP2).
  7. Under Grading, assign maximum points based on your scoring rubric for the assessment.
  8. Choose  a Rubric if you have created one for this grade item.  Otherwise, click Save.

To create a Grade Item in a Category:

  1. Execute steps 1-6 for creating a grade item.  Then either
             a)  Click the dropdown arrow under Category (below the Name boxes), select the
category for this grade item, and click Save (or Save & New to create another grade
                    item)…
             b) Or, if the category for the item dos not yet exist, click New Category next to the
Category box.  In the window that appears, give the new category a name.   If all grade
items in the category have the same number of points, check Distribute points across all
items, enter the number of points per grade item and click Save  (or Save & New to
                   create another grade item).
Two more options for stand-alone or categorized grade items that you can choose before clicking Save:
  • If the assessment is for extra credit, check Bonus
  • Check Exclude from Final Grade Calculation if the assessment is e.g., a practice quiz, that should not be counted toward the Final Grade.
